HOW TO SUB QUERIES & FULL MS IN THE DIGITAL AGE

by the amazing  Mark Weber

Subbing your ms to agents has definitely changed. No more do you print out reams of paper and ship them off in a box. Now you query and send full requested manuscript via email. And we agents then forward your email with the requested full manuscript to our e-reader, which for me is a kindle. So here are some important tips to help you sub successfully in the digital age:

1. When sending a requested manuscript via email, always send it as a .doc not a .docx since agents/editors cannot forward .docx to their kindles. (updated Jan 2012-Kindles now can download .docx)

2. Name your document/manuscript using your name and title of ms--example: Mellom DITCHED.doc--much of your title will be cut off on the Kindle Home Page so seeing your last name and first couple of words of your title really helps. Let's say we gab via Twitter and I think, I'm going to read her ms tonight....but without your name I have to scroll thru all of the ms on my kindle to figure out which one is yours. I might just stop at someone else's if theirs catches my eye first.

3. Put all your contact info---Name, Phone Number, Email Address--- on the first page of your document before the title so I can hit ‘Go to Beginning’ on my kindle, easily find your contact info, and call or email you with good news.

4. BTW, your query is a biz letter but not formatted like the old typewriter/snail mail days so don't format it as such. No need to put your return address on top left, and then date, etc. Put all that at the end under your name....it becomes your signature. If I am reading your query on my phone, I am not going to scroll thru all that to get to your query. I’ll save it for later when I am at my computer, and by then your query email has about 35 emails that came in after that. I do a lot of requesting via my phone---email you back for a request, not calling.

Here is my signature on every email I send, do something similar for yours.

5. If you have a website and/or blog, please put it in your signature. I am going to google you if I am interested and probably before I request your full (screening for crazy here and hoping to find wonderful kudos about you) so direct me to what you want me to see rather than letting google reveal who you are, or making me read through the 7 million John Smith's to figure out which one is you.

BRILLIANT MARKETING CAMPAIGN FOR A SERIES--FREE KINDLE BOOK: DON'T DIE DRAGONFLY by Linda Joy Singleton

DON'T DIE DRAGONFLY is the first book in THE SEER series. Flux published the 6th book in the series, MAGICIAN'S MUSE, in October 2010. So knowing that hooking a reader into book one compels them to gobble up an entire series, Flux is giving away book 1 as an e-book, and sales of all of THE SEER books are on the rise.
Congrats Flux and Linda Joy!

After getting kicked out of school and sent to live with her grandmother, Sabine Rose is determined to become a "normal" teenage girl. She hides her psychic powers from everyone, even from her grandmother Nona, who also has "the gift." Having a job at the school newspaper and friends like Penny-Love, a popular cheerleader, have helped Sabine fit in at her new school. She has even managed to catch the eye of the adorable Josh DeMarco. Yet, Sabine can't seem to get the bossy voice of Opal, her spirit guide, out of her head . . . or the disturbing images of a girl with a dragonfly tattoo. Suspected of a crime she didn't commit, Sabine must find the strength to defend herself and, later, save a friend from certain danger.

From the Author

I've always been fascinated with psychics and ghosts. I came up with the idea of a psychic "Nancy Drew" over 20 years ago. The original title for THE SEER was "Psychic Sleuth" but when I sold the idea to Llewellyn/Flux, they suggested THE SEER -- which I liked better. My editor was so excited by this series proposal in 2003 that she offered me a contract on only 50 pages. Then I had to hurry and finish the book -- it took three months. I usually take about 6 months to finish a book.

I'm often asked if the characters are based on anyone I know. Dominic is easy because he's based on my husband, who is an outdoors guy who loves animals and rides horses. Josh is based on an old boyfriend who was apprenticed to a master magician. Sabine isn't based on anyone. She came to me in dreams like a separate person who wanted her story told. When I imagine her, it's like she's standing next to me, watching to see what I'll write next.

Originally the series was only going to be 3 books. Then it was honored by YALSA (librarians) and I was asked to do a 4th book. More readers wanted another book, so I begged my publisher for a 5th book, and was contracted for #5 FATAL CHARM. That book was supposed to end the series. Still...it didn't feel over for me, so I left the plot about Josh open, hoping to write one more book. I was so excited when a new editor took over and asked for the 6th (and final THE SEER) MAGICIAN'S MUSE. It came out Oct. 2010 and ends the series in a very romantic way.

But the fun isn't over yet...remember the Goth Girl, Thorn? Well in 2012, she gets her own book (and hopefully a series if the books sell good enough). I've already written it and the tentative title is: GOTH GIRL MYSTERIES: #1. GRAVE SECRETS.

ROBIN MELLOM THE CLASSROOM TO DISNEY-HYPERION

FROM PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY CHILDREN'S BOOKSHELF: RIGHTS REPORT
Christian Trimmer of Disney-Hyperion has acquired world English rights to The Classroom by Robin Mellom, pitched as Modern Family for middle graders, in which a documentary crew descends on a middle school to chronicle the life of seventh grader and epic worrier Trevor Jones and his classmates. Publication is planned for summer 2012. Jill Corcoran at Herman Agency did the four-book, six-figure deal.

CONGRATS Robin and Christian! And yes writers, dreams really do come true. Robin has quit her day job and with one YA and one MG pubbing per year, Robin is writing full-time!

There is a great story to who this deal came about, but I will leave that for Robin to share:) Click here for Robin's fab blog and to read how she went from no books to 6 books in 6 months:)
